U.S. Reps. Bill Flores<\/a> (R-Texas), Peter Welch<\/a> (D-Vt.), Bob Goodlatte<\/a> (R-Va.), Jim Costa<\/a> (D-Calif.) and Steve Womack<\/a> (R-Ark.) are taking the lead by sending a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to discourage it from breaching the Renewable Fuel Standard blend wall. The blend wall is the point at which no more ethanol can be blended without creating higher-ethanol blends, such as E15 and above.<\/p>\n

The bipartisan letter comes in response to the EPA\u2019s proposed Renewable Volume Obligations rule for 2014, 2015 and 2016 and is scheduled to arrive before the RVOs are finalized on Nov. 30. The EPA proposal would increase the amount of ethanol from all sources in the nation\u2019s fuel supply to 17.4 billion gallons in 2016, up from 15.93 billion gallons in 2014.<\/p>\n

Those increases would come despite the EPA\u2019s acknowledgement that the current market cannot absorb these higher ethanol production rates. The practical effect of the EPA\u2019s action is that ethanol production will exceed the \u201cblend wall.\u201d That means more E15 and less E10 on future \u00a0markets. More E15 will inevitably lead to inadvertent misfueling, which can damage motorcycle and all-terrain-vehicle engines. Moreover, the use of E15 may void the manufacturer\u2019s warranty.<\/p>\n

The EPA\u2019s proposed rule does not consider the concerns of motorcyclists and ATV owners, despite the agency\u2019s knowing that none of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in use in the United States is approved to use blends with more than 10 percent ethanol (E10).<\/p>\n

This letter would help protect millions of motorcycle and ATV vehicles and the riders who depend on their safe operation.<\/p>\n

The new deadline for signatures is Wednesday, Oct. 28!<\/strong> Act today to ensure your representative signs the Flores\/Welch\/Goodlatte\/Costa\/Womack letter.<\/p>\n

To urge your representative to sign on to the bipartisan letter, just follow the \u201cTake Action\u201d option, which will send a prewritten email directly to your lawmaker demanding access to safe fuel.<\/p>\n
