California OHV Program Under Threat!

California OHV Program Under Threat!

 Take Action

The California OHV program is facing a major threat from Senate Bill 249. This cherished program, long seen as a model nationwide, is slated for renewal due to a sunset provision that was included in the previous program authorization. However as written, SB 249 overlooks the important role the OHV program plays within state parks while serving all Californians. The program not only provides quality, sustainable, family oriented recreation for citizens and visitors alike, but also emphasizes environmental sustainability and protection, as well as public safety and partnerships with federal government agencies that provide OHV opportunities.

If adopted as written, SB 249 would begin to dismantle decades of work and indeed mark the end of this nationally recognized and celebrated program.

AMA members and indeed all OHV recreationists must immediately contact their elected officials and remind them of the benefits the program provides to every citizen and visitor to California. It is important to remind them that the program uses no general fund monies and is in fact based on a user-pay, user-benefit style model.  Monies used to pay for the program include those taxes collected on fuel, State Vehicle Recreation Areas (SVRAs) entrance fees and vehicle registrations (green and red stickers).

Senate Bill 249 would result in a diversion of these funds for non-OHV related purposes and also proposes to reduce the number of OHV representation on the OHV Commission. Additionally it would severely limit opportunities for public involvement in the decision-making process in the future.

The public simply deserves better, and it is incumbent on the Legislature to deliver on the promises made during previous re-authorizations, that this and similar “user pay, user benefit” programs remain untouched. The OHV community has long paid their own way and will continue to do so as long as these monies are used for their intended purpose.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that you and your riding friends become members of the AMA to help protect our riding freedoms. More members mean more clout against the opponents of motorcycling. That support will help fight for your rights – on the road, trail and racetrack and in the halls of government.

Tree Planting Day at Carnegie SVRA March 4th

Carnegie SVRA is hosting a “Volunteer Day Tree Planting” March 4, 2017.  They have 600 trees to plant and hope to get a good start on this first 2017 Tree Planting Day.   The Carnegie Staff is looking for volunteers that enjoy the park and can “give back” to join in this important project.  Of course even if you don’t use the park you are most welcome to join in.  It’s a lofty project and all help will be most welcome.

CAN YOU HELP?

If so please be at the main entrance Kiosk on Saturday March 4th at 10:00 am.  The day will wrap up at 3:00 pm

No such thing as a free lunch?  This time there is…A free lunch will be hosted by District 36 and will be provided by Jerry Fouts, District 36 President.  He’s cooking Hot Dogs and icing Soda for all the volunteers.

Volunteers please bring:

  • A shovel and/or pickax or other digging tools.
  • Gloves
  • Eye Protection
  • Boots (maybe rubber boots if wet)

MMX NOT RUNNING THIS WEEKEND

Jerrad Fisher, Owner of MMX racing has graciously decided to not run the MMX Race, Round 3 of the District 36 Championship series, this weekend due to the outpouring of concern on the short notice and the adverse effect it would have on the many District 36 racers that would be impacted.

We understand that this will cause a finical hardship on MMX Racing and applaud Mr. Fisher for his understanding and putting D36 Members concerns before his.  We ask that you fully support MMX Racing in the future on a reschedule date that will be announced with plenty of lead time.

Wild Piglet Postponed

Wild Piglet Postponed

The Timekeepers Wild Piglet, Round 1 of the D36 SRT Championship Youth Enduro Series, scheduled for this Saturday March 5th has been postponed by the Hollister Hills SVRA.  The Timekeepers MC has reported that due to the weather situation the park rangers have not been in the Renz or Adobe areas for several weeks and there is no time to make repairs or assessments.  Also the club is not being allowed to send riders through to scout the trails.

The Timekeepers MC are currently working with the Park and District 36 to reschedule for this spring.  We anticipate an announcement soon of a new date.
